Zomtober: The Invasion

I'm getting my final Zomtober post in early as I won't be able to get anything done over the weekend, and as promised, after a run of survivors, I'll finish with zombies...

...well, zombie.

This is the last of the Wargames Factory plastic zombies I swapped for a sprue of Zombie Vixens and frankly, it's awful. But he was hiding at the bottom of a drawer, so it seemed a waste to leave him there. I'm not so worried about him being rubbish, as they're all part of the horde.

Anyway, that's me done for Zomtober 2016, and although I've not done loads, the project has got me motivated again, and both painting and gaming have picked up, with hopefully more to come. So, all that remains is to finish with a group shot of the official Zomtober 2016 gang:

What do you mean? Why doesn't it count as an invasion? I know the survivors will easily deal with the two of them, but they might be just the beginning of an invasion...

Oh, all right. I also revisited the rest of my zombies, This year, I've started to use a GW paint called 'Blood for the Blood God' (yes, they do need to get out more) which is a 'wet-look' red used for painting, fairly obviously, blood. And so, having used it on this year's zombies, I thought I'd splatter it about on the rest. It also occurred to me to use it on the bases, to give a bit of a gory look.

Yes, I know that blood wouldn't still be red and glistening, but, a) I want that b-movie 'too-much-blood' look, b) the blood give me a handy way of distinguishing zombies and survivors at a distance, and, c) are you really going to try to argue 'realism' about zombies? Any, here's the real invasion...

Finally, sticking with the invasion theme, I've finished my cruiser for my Dropzone Commander Scourge fleet. This is an Ifrit class cruiser which is armed with two 'burnthrough lasers' which can cause exponentially increasing damage when they hit; which sounds fun.

I've again stuck with washes over silver for the most part, and I'm quite happy with it. It's certainly good enough for the tabletop amongst another dozen or so ships. So that's my 'fleet' done...

...until my Kickstarter delivery arrives...

  1. The ships look great.

I found that the male zombie set from WGF was really poor compared to the Vixens - which has essentially made up my Zombtober entries this year! I've had the male set since Xmas and am yet to put brush to a single one, although they have been glued and primed for some time.....

I use Tamiya clear red for blood and it does look good (for fresh gore) and you can give it a congealed look by adding a swirl of black while it's still wet, but it is a bugger as you have to use Tamiya cleaning fluid to clean your brushes. I take it the GW version is acrylic?

    1. Thanks. It is acrylic. I thing I get a bit of a congealed look because I tend to run a brown wash over red anyway. The trouble is it never really photographs well - the 'eyes' on the ships have been done with the same stuff, but it just doesn't show.

If I was buying now, I wouldn't bother with the WF male zombies, and would get the Studio plastics (fairly generic as they are) instead. The Vixens are in a different league, and are in my opinion one of the best mass plastic sets out there (obviously not compared to high end stuff like Malifaux). It's just a shame that they aren't the bargain that they once were.

  2. Any additions to your zombie set-up has to be good-right?
The WF set's were a great starting point and value formoney for any zombie gaming despite their poor initial set (the zed men) compared to what they are now.

    1. I agree that when they came out they were much needed, and the horde doesn't need too much detail. It just comes up short when I've only done one this week. :)

I still have a sprue of Vixens to do (next year?) and then I'll probably switch to metal if I need more...although the new Mantic game is calling...

  3. Excellent stuff Kieron, and well done in your Zomtobering this year. :)

I think you have managed to overcome the deficiencies of the WF Zombie model. :)

Nice work on the DFC ship too. :)

    1. Thanks. The WF zombie is the worst of the ones I have - which is arguably the reason why I'd hadn't painted it before. It's done now though.

  4. Nice paint work dude. I know what you mean about the WGF zeds I painted 6 years ago and never really had the urge to paint anymore of them.

    1. The only reason I did this one is that I was pushed for time and he was already put together and undercoated. But he's turned out all right.
