These are some very old GW bats (from the very brief period when bat swarms were worthwhile in WFB) that I've dug out of my bits box rebased and matt varnished (before washes I used to use a lot of ink).
The reason for this is that I have a mind to try the solo/cooperative narrative game Rangers of Shadow Deep and the opening scenario requires some giant rats.
I don't have any rats, but I did have these, and as bats are essentially rats with wings I figured they'd prixy well enough. I'll either use them with the rats stats, or replace the rats with bats from the rulebook when they turn up in missions.
As a bonus, the bats will also work well as the giant flies that turn up in later scenarios as I don't have any of those either.
Did I mention that I'm quite cheap?
In other news, this has finally happened...
Acquired: 190
Painted: 194
Great idea. Of course it makes sense to use what you have!
ReplyDeleteIt's something that is a bit odd after so many years wargaming and actually starting a Skaven army once that I don't have any rats.
Deletegreat idea
ReplyDeleteCheers
DeleteGreat stuff Kieron! Agreed, bats are just rats with wings 😀
ReplyDeleteI recently painted up a few of these as well. They're quite characterful miniatures and you did a great job on them. Brilliant idea to double them up as rats.
ReplyDeleteThough when you mention flying rats I usually think about pigeons 😁.
I didn't actually paint them recently, all I did was give them a coat of matt varnish.
