The Big Stink

And my final Masters of the Universe offering in this current avalanche is the aromatic, skunk-themed villain, Stinkor.

Stinkor was released as one of a pair of scented toys with Moss Man. Whereas Moss Man was basically Beastman, painted green, covered in velvet and dipped in air freshener, Stinkor was Merman, painted black, given different armour and made to smell 'musky.

I never had one, so I don't know what he actually smelled like, but I know I didn't like the idea of smelly toys.

The model is by the same sculptor that did my Ram-Man and Fisto, and has the same chunky, characterful build as them.

If I'm honest, he's probably a bit too big for Stinkor (that's a 40mm base he's on). The larger size didn't really matter for bruisers like Fisto and Ram-Man, but doesn't sit well with how I see Stinkor.

However, he's not a character I'm deeply attached to, and in the 2002 cartoon he was created by an accident in Tri-Klops' lap which mutated him and caused him to grow. Let's just assume he kept growing.

So that's the last of my Masters of the Universe miniatures done for now. I've got an order in for sculpts of Faker, Mekanek and a Sky Sled; I'm hoping to pick up more Palace Guards and Horde Troopers when they become available; there's a Heroclix conversion of Buzz-Off I'd like to try; and I'll continue to keep my eye out for suitable proxies for the inhabitants of Etheria.

But for now, that's it. I'm now going to bombard you with progress on other projects.

One more added to the plus pile.

Hear Me Roar!

I don't think I need to explain who this one is. If I do, my recent posts will have been really confusing for you.

This is another, frankly brilliant, piece from the same sculptor that made Webstor, Kobra Khan, Orko and Imp and it was a joy to paint. However, as a resin model the tail is terrifying as I've already knocked it off once. Fortunately it broke at the join point (it came as a separate piece) and was easy to fix, but I will be handling with extreme care.

The stripes on Battlecat gave me pause but I ended up copying a picture from the cartoon, using a darker yellow, giving them a wash and doing thinner lines of a brighter yellow.

I also decided to add a few metal and horn details on the armour, rather that keep them the traditional red.  I feel this beaks up the block of colour quite well.

He-Man is separate (I might even try magnetising at some point) so he can dismount in combat. I based Battlecat on a 60mm base to use him as a Greater Animal Companion in 7TV. I've got a plan to put together a house rule so that He-Man can ride Battlecat in game.

Sadly, despite coming in two parts, as Gimli would say, "That still only counts as one!" So not loads of progress, but I'm well chuffed with how it worked out.

Enjoy The Little Things

Back to the Masters of the Universe today with two of the smaller characters: Orko and Imp.

Imp is Hordak's pet, confidante and spy, able to transform into other creatures and known for taking pleasure in pointing out the failures of the rest of the Horde.

The sculpt is from the same sculptor as Webstor and Kobra Khan and is based on the original series of She-Ra, rather than the Netflix one, where the Imp is more cherub and less piggy. The wings were fiddly as well to attach, but the details in the face are excellent.

Orko is from the same sculptor and came as a freebie with another order for something a little larger that I'm currently working on.

This is the second Orko I've done, the first used 'Norko' from Heresy Miniatures and was more based on the 2002 cartoon. I prefer the new one as Orko, but Norko will now serve as another Trollan when necessary, such as Snoob, one of the many extra Trollans that show up from time to time to irritate and annoy both the Eternians and the viewers.

I've only got a couple more Masters of the Universe miniatures to go in my backlog, but they are both a little larger than what I've already done over the last week.

Another two bite the dust.

To Arms!

Quick post today. I've been basing and undercoating the next round of MotU figures, so I took the opportunity to finish off a couple of pieces from the Mantic Treasury Terrain Crate.

I've not done anything clever with these as I wanted to get them done quickly for a game of Rangers of Shadow Deep at the weekend, as one of the rooms we might encounter is an armoury.

They're not actually as good as the piles of gold, as the spear and halberd are very bendy and the nature of the soft plastic means that some areas are merged when they should be. However, as pieces of terrain for occasional use  they are fine.

I went with blue and red arms to match the main colours of my Bretonnian army, just because.

Anyway, they're done.

I Castaspell On You...

...because she's mine...

I've taken a step a way from custom sculpts for today to the world of proxy models for my interpretation of Castaspella, the Queen of the magical kingdom of Mystacor, who sounded like she was played by Kathryn Hepburn after a day of heavy smoking.

The miniature I've used is the Forest Moon Princess from Cold War Miniatures 'Princes of the Universe' range. To my eye, the collar, hair and bodice evoked the look of at least the top half of Castaspella, although I did need to remove her left hand that was holding a gun (I replaced it with a Wargames Factory Zombie Vixen hand).

Admittedly, her yellow skirt is too long and so to balance this I've changed the boot colour to blue and not given her the leggings the original wore.

It's not a perfect rendition of the character, but as with most of She-Ra's allies (like Glimmer, Frosta, and Flutterina), I'm happy with close enough.

In terms of painting I actually began with the yellow (which is two coats Cassandora Yellow over white) and worked around it. This led to some very intense concentration and only a little bit if swearing when I messed up. However, I feel vindicated that it was the right approach.

The Great Rebellion is getting a real influx of recruits at the moment, so I might need to turn my attention to the Horde in the next few days.

Where's Your Bow?

Today I present something a little simpler. A pair of Brightmoon 'Archers' to join the Great Rebellion in my She-Ra collection.

These two were produced as custom sculpts from the same source as my Hordak, Horde Troopers and Brightmoon Guards. In fact, these models are slight redesigns of the Brighmoon Guards, changing their weapon and giving them a helmet.

The colour scheme is somewhat suspect, but this is largely down to the sensibilities of 1980's children's TV. Sadly, this made painting them a bit unsatisfying, as there wasn't much to do. This might have led to me being a bit slapdash and these photos have helped me spot some bits that need revisiting.

On top of this, I really need to have a word with myself about taking the time to tidy up resin miniatures before painting, as cleaning flash and mould lines (not that there were many) during painting is a pain. Also, I really should have painted the weapons and hands before attaching them to the body, as working around them was awkward.

I do really like the miniatures and I think they've turned out fine, I'm just sad that I don't think I've done them justice. I'll probably give them a bit more love over the coming days, let's face it, I've got time on my hands.

As well pointing out the inaccuracies of these models' names, the post title is also a nod to the fact that although there are a good number of princesses I've not got in my Great Rebellion, the key character I'm now missing is Bow, he of the impressive moustache.

You can perhaps see why this is proving tricky to proxy. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Two more done though and the numbers are moving steadily in my favour.

The Bridge Guards

From the chronicles of Brother Rendall...

Is there to be no end to this?

Only hours after we arrived back from destroying the nests of spiders, Master Venkh received a message from his commanding officer. Contact has been lost with the beacon tower of Tor Varden, and it is presumed to have been overrun. We are commanded to proceed with all swiftness to Tor Varden to ascertain the truth. If the tower has fallen, we must learn what enemy forces now occupy it and harass or eliminate them as opportunity presents.

We shall be accompanied once again by the Lady Shevarith and her retinue, Troughton and Wormtail. Nardol, the villager we rescued, has bravely offered to join our quest, but I fear the perils we shall face will be beyond him...in truth, I fear they will be beyond me.

.    .    .

As we made our way towards Tor Varden, the gentle, rolling hills slowly gave way to rocky woodlands, and finally into the boulder-filled dell known locally as ‘the Tangle’. It is an overgrown, unnerving place – a perfect site for an ambush as the large rocks and trees cut lines of sight down to just a few yards in most places.

Proceeding cautiously, we eventually heard the Enthel River, which we knew we must cross to reach Tor Varden. As we approached, however, we heard other noises as well, nearly drowned out by the river. Voices, of some inhuman type, a language filled with snarls and guttural grunts.

Climbing to the top of a large boulder, keen-eyed Garvin got a clear view down to the river, and he reported that standing astride the old stone bridge was a knot of hobgoblins, and, judging by the large cooking pot they had set up by the fire, they were camped there to guard the bridge. Master Venkh predictably decided that there was nothing for it, the hobgoblins would have to be eliminated, as quickly and quietly as possible.

As we stealthily made our way through the undergrowth, our position was almost given away by another of those great, foul bats we had faced in the village, however, Lady Shevarith quickly and quietly brought it down with a blast of mystic energy.

However, the noise of it falling into the undergrowth must have been heard, as we spied some of the bridge guards cautiously approaching our position.

We were spotted though, and we split up to edge closer, trying to choose the right moment to launch our attack.

Indeed, Master Venkh managed to approach close enough that he said he could hear one of the beasts breathing.

With us about to lose the advantage of surprise, Shevarith launched the attack with a well placed magical bolt that shot through the trees and stuck the great brute on the bridge, that I took to be their leader, square in the chest.

In a move that was totally in character, and without thought for his own safety, Master Venkh charged out of hiding with a blood-curdling yell. Garvin took up a position to fire onto the bridge, whilst I looked on, foolishly standing in the open and only narrowly avoiding a grim fate as a crossbow bolt nicked my shoulder.

My master's charge somehow failed to bowl over his opponent, but succeeded in drawing the attention of the entire hobgoblin war party towards him.

However, this distraction allowed Troughton and Wormtail to launch their attack, hacking down one of the creatures from behind.

Despite having surprised our foes, we were surprised in turn as hobgoblin we were previously unaware of leapt from the undergrowth towards Shevarith and the foolhardy Nardol.

Things looked grim. Although my master had felled his initial foe, others, including the brute, had rushed to take its placed. I hurried forward to aid my lord, but we were sorely pressed.

Similarly, the Lady Shevarith and Nardol, neither of them overly skilled in melee wre kept from aiding the main fray by their surprise assailant.

After exchanging several blows, the brute succumbed to Master Venkh's axe.

My master then nobly rushed down the hill to draw enemies away from the stout hearted Troughton, who looked like he might be overwhelmed, because it seemed that Wormtail had deserted him and left him to fend for himself.

I can only imagine that the ill-mannered Wormtail had thought to loot the enemy camp for his own benefit, rather than stand with his comrades. If this was his goal, he did not benefit as he pitched forward when struck by a crossbow bolt, and did not move.

Seeing his 'friend' fall seemed to enrage Troughton, who cut through a swathe of foes to reach the fallen Wormtail. He must have discovered that Wormtail's wound wasn't mortal, as after a moment, he pressed on towards the bridge.

Meanwhile, Shevarith had finally got the better of her for, although the normally serene loremaster was battered and bruised. Nardol had bravely stood with her, but had succumbed to exhaustion and she kindly instructed him to take no further part in the fight.

It was at this point that I too was taken out of the fight with a blow to the head as I sought to aid my master. The last thing I saw as my vision swirled was Garvin rushing forward to aid a beleaguered Toughton.

I was later told that the last hobgoblin fell to Venkh's axe, whilst Troughton and Garvin searched the enemy camp, finding a scroll that seemed to detail the enemy dispositions and a potion that Garvin dutifully passed to our master.

Although we emerged victorious from this fray, it could have turned out differently. Only Venkh and Garvin came out relatively unscathed, Lady Shevarith and Troughton were both worse for wear, Nardol and I had succumbed to our exertions and Wormtail was badly wounded.

We can only hope that this battle would be the worst that we might face, but sadly, I fear that this will not prove to be the case.
